Brothers Launch Site: 20,000' AGL Wavier with windows to 35,000' AGL

Site Description: The Brothers site is located about 40 miles east of Bend, Oregon. Set in the middle of miles of sagebrush, this launch site has an FAA waiver of 20,000' AGL with windows to 35,000' AGL and supports flights from Model to High Power Level 3! Lodging is available in Bend. Toilet facilities and unimproved camping are available onsite. The burning of sagebrush for campfires is prohibited by the landowner and all campers are requested to bring their own firewood.

Directions to Brothers:

Warning: Brothers is 40 miles from the last "cheap" gas and water. Please be equipped to handle any auto mechanical difficulties you may have. The last 2 miles from the highway is unimproved road; a car with decent ground clearance is highly advised.

1.

Take Hwy 20 out of Bend towards Burns.

2.

When you are about 25 miles out you should see the small town of Millican.

3.

Go approx. 14.7 miles farther east on Hwy 20.

4.

If you make it to the town of Brothers you've gone too far.

5.

Turn right onto dirt road (look for launch signs). Please close the gate!

Follow dirt road south around .7 mi,

Make a right (west) turn, follow this road for another .5 mi

8.

Make a left turn (south), follow this for 1.1 mi.

9.

When you reach the flight line, please drive 3 mph or slower

 

Alternate Directions: Alternate route to the launch site

1.

Follow Hwy. 26 from Portland to Prineville.

2.

Go through Prineville until you see the turnoff for Prineville Reservoir, Bowman Dam, Hwy. 27. Turn right.

3.

The first 12-15 miles of Hwy. 27 follow the South Fork of the Crooked River up to Bowman Dam. Shortly thereafter the road turns to gravel for the next 30 miles. This is hard packed, well maintained gravel. The first few miles are winding and there are a couple hairpin curves, but after that the road straightens out and can be driven at highway speeds. Just slow down for curves and watch out for range cattle, pronghorn, deer and elk.

After approximately 45 miles from Prineville, Hwy. 27 terminates at Hwy. 20. Turn left.

Go approx. 5 miles east on Hwy 20.

If you make it to the town of Brothers you've gone too far.

Turn right onto dirt road (look for launch signs). Please close the gate!

Follow dirt road south around .7 mi,

9.

Make a right (west) turn, follow this road for another .5 mi

10.

Make a left turn (south), follow this for 1.1 mi.

11.

When you reach the flight line, please drive 3 mph or slower
