The June Oregon Rocketry meeting was held on June 3rd at Giovanni's Restaurant in Beaverton. Minutes for the meeting are attached below. Gary Goncher OROC Secretary Oregon Rocketry June Meeting Minutes Giovanni’s Restaurant, June 3, 2010 The meeting was called to order at 7:30 PM by Gary Goncher. Officers present: Gary Goncher and Yvonne Moscoe. Spring Thunder Launch Report A total of 95 flights were flown at the Spring Thunder launch in Brothers May 21-23: 16 on Friday, 48 on Saturday, and 31 on Sunday. A pretty good tally considering the intermittent snows on Friday and Saturday. Let’s hope for better weather at the June launch. Summer Skies Launch Preparation The Summer Skies launch will be held June 25-27. As usual Friday will be a research day, and Saturday and Sunday will be commercial motors only. The trailer will arrive late Friday afternoon from its location in Bend. As per the suggestion of OROC president Robert Krausert, a flier’s meeting will be held each day at 9 AM to discuss field conditions, unusual flights, and range assignments. We will try to put together a schedule for LCO, RSO, and registration/pad assignment help at the start of each day. The range may close earlier than the posted 2 PM closing time if no fliers are waiting to fly rockets. Please let the LCO know if you plan to fly a rocket after noon on Sunday. See you on the sage! Help at Launches The club is getting fewer people to volunteer at launches for all the duties necessary to put on the launch. A daily 9 AM flier’s meeting will be instituted at the June launch that will hopefully assist in getting a schedule of range duties put together each day. Help is needed with equipment setup, registration, LCO, RSO, and pad assignment duties. Please volunteer at the fliers meeting for some of these duties if you are able to. Training will be provided for those that need to learn the responsibilities of each of the positions – please ask a club officer if you would like to help but do not feel qualified. Help with packing the trailer at the end of each launch is particularly needed, since many fliers depart early on Sunday. Please help make OROC launches enjoyable for everyone. Launch Safety Discussion There has been considerable discussion via the club e-mail list over the past few weeks on range safety, related to the launch of a large (L class) sparky motor at the May launch that started a small sage brush fire. Many options were discussed, from clearing brush to moving pads to banning certain motors. The OROC BOD will be discussing clearing of brush around pads with the new property owners (all OROC members). In the meantime, all sparky motor launches should be cleared with the RSO before rockets are prepped. There are no plans to ban any motors, but the RSO will use his discretion in assuring that all flights are safe with respect to fire danger. NSL Launch Report Several OROC members attended the recent NAR NSL launch in Alamogordo, NM. There has been some discussion by OROC members about hosting this launch, so a brief summary of the launch was presented by Gary Goncher. The 3-day launch took place over Memorial Day, with just under 100 fliers. Ground support equipment was excellent, with more than 70 pads in operation (many more that were actually needed for the number of flights flown). Several L and M class rockets were flown, but the vast majority of flights were J or below. About 6-8 vendors were on site, including one food vendor who provided excellent BBQ! A catered launch dinner was held the evening prior to the launch, and several tours to area attractions were scheduled. A launch of this type would certainly be within the capability of Oregon Rocketry, but would require substantial effort by quite a few people to organize. Treasurer’s Report Yvonne Moscoe was present at the June meeting but did not provide an update on club finances. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 PM.
